Almost there.

Well, the opening for my solo show is just a couple days away. I never knew doing a solo show was so much work. For group shows, I just have to worry about getting my piece(s) in by the deadline and then wait for the opening. So let me run down a little check list for myself:

Yep. Another painting.

This one wasn't for a show or anything. I just felt like doing a painting in between gigs and playing around with some different techniques. The title is "Guy".


More paintings on the way soon. These will be my first collaborations with another artist!

Finally done.

I actually started this painting right after the last one. I just decided to take a couple days off. So, here it is. Enjoy.

About a week ago, I finally went out and bought a lamp for my studio room. The difference is so amazing that I decided to take some pics to prove it.

Finished this up last night.

The title of this painting is "What Does Your Soul Look Like?", after the DJ Shadow song. Whenever I hear the song, I always imagine looking into a dark void trying to find myself, and it seems to fit perfectly with these hooded people that I've been doing. I was also experimenting with a bit more "gritty" background. So, here it is:

Another New Painting

There has been so much going on in my personal life lately. As I adjust to the changes, it's only natural that my artwork does as well. Usually, I dislike even attempting to blend paint (mainly because I don't have the patience), but I found that with the tough times it is really theraputic. I really like the way this painting came out, and I might stick with this look for a while. We'll see.

Had a chance to have some scans done.

Both of these paintings are going to be sent off to the Fly Over Gallery is Madison, WI, for their Leftover show. I was supposed to send some "leftover" art that I had laying around, but I didn't feel happy enough with the older stuff or that it reflected where I'm at now. So, I cooked up these new pieces. Now, I just have to work on the plates (more on that later).

Finally.... a painting from start to finish.

I've been wanting to take pics of my whole process of doing a painting for a while. The problem was that I kept on forgetting to take pics in between stopping points. So, here we go:

This first step I was just blocking in some color.


Now, I'm adding some drips of contrasting colors. I'm also starting to think about which color combinations I want to go with.


After the colors are decided upon, I felt like I needed to add some more warmth to the lower right hand corner.


At this point, I'm starting to add in some paper textures with a decoupage technique. I like the textures that this techinque adds to the painting.



I'm still building up layers of paint and paper. I don't have a plan as I'm doing this, I'm just going on what I think will look best.


Here's a crappy pic of the main image for the painting. It started off with a pic that I posed for, which was then redrawn in Photoshop.


I then transfer the drawing onto my canvas with a Sharpie.


I use a Sharpie marker so that I can still see the outlines through the paint. I'm not sure why the paint reacts like that to the Sharpie, but I'm not going to argue with it. It really helps a lot when I'm on to the outlining stage.


So, here's the outlining stage. Not much to explain here. I use a liner brush, and to make the paint smoother I thin it out a little with some soapy water. I'm not sure where I heard about that trick, but it works great.


And then the final step is another outline that goes around the figure with a lighter color to really make him pop.

New Paintings

Well.... Not really new. I've had these done for a while, but with the hectic schedule and all, I haven't been able to post these yet.

This first one is the Skull Sessions show being held at the Bear and Bird Gallery in Lauderhill, Florida. The show opens on October 27th.


These next couple are for very first solo show that is being held at Pink Ghost, which opens on February 2, 2008. The show is titled "From the Depths." The title comes from me subconsciously starting to doodle these sea creatures once I moved to South Florida, where the marine life paintings run rampant. I guess I just wanted to do my own take on it. Also, some of the paintings in the show are from the depths of my closet, a few dating back to 2006. The style is a lot simpler and I'm mainly focused on shape, colors, and composition for these. So here they are:

Wow. Has it really been that long since I've posted? A lot of stuff has been going on lately. I've been working on a lot of new paintings for a couple different shows. Here is a short list of the upcoming shows:

A couple new paintings.

New Paintings

This first new painting was done to get back at a friend, Jeremy. He had done a portrait of me without my knowledge. The title of this painting is "Revenge Is a Bitch."
I can't get a link of his portrait of me to work. Once I figure it out, I'll post it. But believe me, his painting looks better.

Pics from current series.

These are all done with collage and acrylic on illustration board. With this series, I'm pushing myself to paint more people. I'm also doing all the outlines with a brush, where before I would wuss out and go with the trusty paint markers. Sorry for the low quality pics. I need to invest in some good lighting.

I finally did it.

I've been trying to find the time to get a website up and running for what seems like forever. Between my day job, my paintings, and vinyl customs I just haven't managed to find the time. I figured why not at least set up a blog? So, here it is. The title "in progress" pretty much tells you what you can expect, a lot of progress updates for a couple different series of paintings as well as some vinyl customs that I am working on. Hopefully, I'll be able to update this frequently. Thanks for reading this and I hope you stick around.
